He began his career with the cabaret band Caspian, which became the Associates. Together, they recorded three albums: The Affectionate Punch (1980), the singles compilation Fourth Drawer Down (1981), and Sulk (1982). In 1982, he left the band on the eve of what would have been the Sulk tour. After leaving the Associates, he went on and produced music for Cocteau Twins, Paul Haig, Anna Domino, and others. While he also continued with other associates, he established himself as a producer. In 1986, he signed a recording contract with the Belgian label Les Disques du Crepuscule and embarked on a solo career.
Without Alan, the Associates went on and recorded two more albums, Perhaps (1985) and Wild and Lonely (1990). And then after their final album, the Associates disbanded effectively but Alkan and Billy Mackenzie reconvened in 1993 to try to record new material. However, the reunion was short-lived and Mackenzie died in 1997. In his solo career, he recorded three solo albums: The World Begins to Look Her Age (1986), She Loves Me Not (1987), and the fully instrumental The Big Picture Sucks (1989). Later, he worked as a lecturer at Stow College in Glasgow until 2010 when he left and returned to music production. While working as a lecturer, he helped students to set up their own in-house record label Electric Honey which went on to launch the careers of bands such as Belle and Sebastian, Snow Patrol, and Billy Clyro.
