The former First Lady of Nigeria and wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, Aisha Halilu Buhari, was elected President in May 29th, 2015. In October, Fatima Daura, the daughter of the newspaper’s Editor Mamman Daura, was accused by Aisha of verbally abusing her and threatening her family. Fatima recorded the video of Aisha screaming in the presidential residence Abuja in Nigeria and sent her video to the media. Fatima Daura said she recorded the video because no one would have believed her if she made those claims without evidence.

Aisha Buhari confirmed she was the one in the video and alleged that Fatima Daura had mocked her while recording her. Aisha apologized for her actions via a statement issued by her spokesperson. She stated she was furious for the reason that Mamman Daura, his wife, and his family refused her access to a portion of the presidential residence after President Buhari had a court order directing Mamman Daura as well as his entire family to leave the presidential villa.  

In the first months of 2022 Nigerian college student Aminu Adamu Mohammed made a post on the social media platform Twitter and mentioned Aisha in a tweet which could be seen as a slanderous manner.

There were conflicting media reports claiming that Aminu was a commenter on an image that Aisha appeared overweight in appearance. The tweet was translated in English from a transcript of the Hausa phrase Aminu tweeted “Mama is feeding fat on poor people’s money. ” In essence, Aminu was suggesting that Aisha was stealing money from the government. Aminu was charged in court and detained five months later in the middle of November 2022. The charges include cybercrime computer-related forgery, cybersquatting, conspiracy, and criminal breaches of trust.

It has triggered a number of activist organizations, Amnesty International, the National Association of Nigerian Students, and other citizens urging for the Nigerian authorities to let go of Aminu for the violation of human rights related to freedom of speech as well as the alleged torture Aminu suffered during his captivity. Following public and international outrage over this incident on the 2nd of December 2022, all charges were dismissed following the withdrawal of the original complaint by Aisha.
