A Career with the Wiggles
In the early 1990s, after the Cockroaches disbanded, Anthony Field asked Fatt to help them record the Wiggles’ first album in 1991. Fatt’s response to Field’s request was “Sure but long will it take? Field reported that Fatt had done exemplary work for the Cockroaches he was “a musical backbone for The Wiggles”. During his time with the Wiggles, he wore a purple skivvy. And thus originated the Wiggles character Henry the Octopus and occasionally voiced Wags the Dog and performed those voices when other actors took over the roles.
He said it took him twelve months to learn the language of preschool, including addressing children using the inclusive “everybody” instead of “boys and girls”. Thus he also says that the first Wiggles performances were traumatic for him because he was not used to being around children. His schtick was sleeping at odd times which led to a Wiggle’s catchphrase and the title of one of their songs “Wake Up Jeff! Moreover, he was the oldest Wiggle and was well-known for his laid-back personality which according to Field made him “invaluable company on the road”. Jeff was the only Wiggle member without a background in early childhood education, as he stated that was the reason falling asleep was chosen as his shtick, “because it was a way of getting me involved in the shows without actually having to do anything”.

Kathleen Warren (the group’s former professor at Macquarie ) believed that the schtick empowered children. While Paul Field reported that children in the Wiggle’s audience felt “great excitement”. It was announced on May 17, 2012, that Fatt along with Greg Page and Murray Cook, would be retiring at the end of the year. With Jeff having retired, he was replaced by Lachlan Gillespie as the purple Wiggle. He and the other retired members were expected to remain involved with the creative and production aspects of the group. Moreover, he continues to perform in reunion shows. In July 2020, Jeff appeared with other classic Wiggles in The Soul Movers music video “Circles Baby”.
Following the announcement of Lachlan’s daughters Lulu and Lottie in September 2022, it was announced that Lachlan would take some time away from the group in order to spend time with his kids. As a result, Jeff decided to temporarily replace Lachlan to film The Wiggly World Of Dance Classes, a four-part series. In addition, he has made appearances in the newest Wiggles series, season 3 of Ready, Steady, and Wiggle, and has returned as the voice of Henry the Octopus. In January 2010, he was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) because of his service to the arts, particularly in children’s entertainment.
