Who is Jun Senoue?

Jun Senoue is a famous Japanese video game composer and musician who works for Sega. He is widely known for his various contributions to the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series. Senoue is also the songwriter and lead guitarist of the band Crush 40, which has contributed to numerous Sonic games.

Jun Senoue Career

Following graduation from college in 1993, Senoue sent demo tapes to Namco and Sega, with the latter hiring him. Senoue’s first project with Sega was on Dark Wizard, where he arranged a medley of the game’s music for its staff roll. Following this, he wrote a few pieces of music and jingles for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, his first involvement in the Sonic series. He did numerous projects in the Worldwide Soccer series in the mid-1990s, including other games like the Sega Genesis version of Sonic 3D Blast. After this, he was picked to be the lead composer and sound director of Sonic Adventure in 1998. The game’s success led to Senoue’s name becoming known worldwide and being promoted to the sound director of the series.

Following the completion of Sonic Adventure, he moved to San Francisco in 1999. He started to work on Sonic Team USA games such as NASCAR Arcade, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, and Shadow the Hedgehog. In 2005, he launched an EP with Japanese voice actress Junko Noda, called ”Ready!”. The project was under the name J*J and was just available in Japan.

2007 to present

He then provided three new arrangements for the Japanese console launch of OutRun 2 SP in 2007. They included covers of existing series tracks Splash Wave” and ”Rush a Difficulty”, and an original track called ”Lift You Up!”. Later in 2007, he arranged and performed ”Angel Island Zone” from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 for Super Smash Bros Brawl. He then performed several gigs in Tokyo with former Magna-Fi guitarist, C.J. Szuter, in a band named Bubblicious Blvd in 2010.

In 2009, he announced a compilation album called The Works. It contains only three Sonic-related tracks and mostly features more obscure works he provided for other games. It was launched on October 21, 2009. Most recently, he served as the sound director, composer, and arranger for Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I, Episode II, and Sonic Generations. In December 2015, at the Sonic Appreciation festival at Joypolis, Jun revealed a sequel to The Works, titled The Works II. The album was launched on February 24, 2016.

Crush 40 took the stage at the Tokyo Game Show to perform some of their most famous Sonic-based songs for a live audience for the first time in October 2008. Senoue and Gioeli have since created a YouTube account and uploaded video footage of the event.

A new Crush 40 album was launched titled The Best of Crush 40: Super Sonic Songs in 2009. The compilation contained most of the band’s Sonic releases and a mixture of old tracks from NASCAR Arcade and brand new tracks. Crush 40 then performed at the ”Summer of Sonic” convention in London in August 2010, marking their first full-length performance and first performance outside Japan.

2012 to present

The band later performed at two conventions in 2012, at the Summer of Sonic in Brighton and at the Sonic Boom event during the San Diego Comic-Con. Crush 40 launched their first live album in October 2012, called Live!, which featured tracks from their concerts in Tokyo. They then performed in St. Louis for the Sonic Boom 2013 event, in August 2013 and also performed at the 2015 Youmacon in Detroit. Crush 40 performed at the San Diego House of Blues during Comic-Con in July 2016, and at Summer of Sonic in London the next month for the 25th anniversary of the Sonic series. Jun then performed various Sonic material with the Video Game Orchestra at the 2017 Comic-Con in July. The band also contributed to 2019’s Team Sonic Racing, performing its main theme ”Green Light Ride”.
