Tione Jayden Merritt professionally known as Lil Tjay is a famous American rapper, singer, and songwriter. He rose to recognition with his song “Resume” in 2018 and signed to Columbia Records later that year. His stage name is derived from the first letter of his first name and the first three letters of his middle name.

In 2019, he released his debut studio album, True 2 Myself. The following year, his mixtape, State of Emergency was released and featured only drill artists from New York City. His debut album True 2 Myself debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, marking the album his first chart release. A Career from 2016 to 2019

He began releasing music on SoundCloud in 2016. One of his first songs, “Resume” was released when he was 16 years old and quickly began spreading online. On March 10, 2018, he competed and placed first at the Coast 2 Coast LIVE NYC All Ages Edition where his performances gained the attention of a record label A&R who was in attendance to judge the showcase. Thereafter, he released the single “Brothers” which became his biggest song at the time and thus led him to sign with Columbia Records.

Lil released five tracks within the first 10 months of his career that included over one million plays on SoundCloud. “Brothers”, “Resume”, “Goat”, and “Leaked” each accumulated tens of millions of streams”. He went on to work with CashMoneyAP in 2018 to release “None of Your Love”, which also was a success and amassed tens of millions of plays. At the end of 2018, he released his debut EP No Comparison. He was then featured on fellow American rapper Polo G‘s single “Pop Out” in January 2019, which peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In addition, he was featured on the boy band PrettyMuch’s “Lying” in July. Later that year, he released an Ep titled F.N. The project’s lead single, “F.N” peaked at No. 56 on the Billboard Hot 100 and thus became his first solo charting song. On October 11, 2019, he released his debut album, True 2 Myself. The album peaked at No. 5 on the US Billboard 200. In December, he was featured on a remix of 24kGoldn’s song “Valentin”.

A Career from 2020 to 2021

Lil reached the Billboard Hot 100 again in early 2020 with his single “20/20” which peaked at No. 94 on the chart. He went on to release another EP State of Emergency on May 8, 2020. The EP focused heavily on drill music, a popular subgenre in New York City. The seven-song EP included the track “Zoo York” featuring Fivio Foreign and Pop Smoke and debuted at No. 65 on the Hot 100. That year in July, he appeared on Pop Smoke’s debut posthumous album, Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon, on the track “Mood Swings”, which reached No. 17 on the Hot 100.

On August 11, he was included in XXL’s 2020 Freshman Class. He then released his single “Calling My Phone” on February 12, 2021, a collaboration with American singer 6lack. The song was a success as it debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 thus becoming the highest-charting song of his career. “Headshot” a collaboration with Polo G and Fivo Foreign was released on March 19 as the single from his second studio album, Destined 2 Win which was released on April 2, 2021. The album consisted of 21 tracks. He released the lead single with Fivo Foreign and Kay Flock to his upcoming third studio album Not In The Mood.

A Career from 2022 to Present

In early March 2022, he began teasing a new song titled “In My Head” which uses a sample of Iyaz’s “Replay”. Eventually, it was released on April 1, 2022. Lil then released a freestyle “Lavish” on April 24, on his YouTube channel. The following day, he announced his EP Strictly 4 My Fans.

A Career in Live Performances

Throughout 2019, he accompanied Seattle rapper Lil Mosey on his nationwide tour. Moreover, he has performed at the three-day Rolling Loud Miami music festival along with Kid Cudi, Migos, and Travis Scott in Miami Gardens, Florida in May 2019 and at the Los Angeles festival in December.
