Following an artist showcase, he went on to be signed by Louil Silas to his Silas Records imprint. Later after three years, he completed the work of his debut album. His first single “All I Need” was released in March 1996, and written by Powell, Sam Salter, and Laney Stewart. The single went on to peak at #32 on the Billboard R&B chart.
On March 12, 1996, his self-titled album was released and opened at #35 on the Billboard R&B and #32 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. In 1998, he began to work on his second album, debuting the lead single “I Wasn’t with It”. The single became his first single to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 (#85 US, #25 R&B). Bolstered by the success of the single, on September 8, 1998, his second album ‘Bout It was released and topped the Heatseekers chart. In February 1999, the album’s second single, “You” was released.
